It includes good insight from a former cop and good warnings about common misconceptions inspired pilice movies and TV shows. That aside, this book definitely saved me from making a few embarrassing mistakes in my own work in progress featuring some crime-solving – I’m really glad I picked it up!

As a writer, I am constantly researching. It gives you investkgation ability to write that one sentence or piece of dialogue that makes readers ask “How’d you know that? In fact, a lot of it is flat out wrong. While this book is a great start as far as research, it shouldn’t be anyone’s only source. Loffland takes very mundane and technical processes and places them before the layman in an understandable, and useable, format.
This comprehensive resource includes: Or the difference between homicide, murder, and manslaughter.
My main criticism is that it’s very U. It is well organized, so you can easily locate just the information that you need, and it gives just enough detail to understand what you need to know to write about police investigations. I had invstigation read more. It left me with a bit of an outsider feeling – and I don’t think served the otherwise open and informative tone.
Can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Howdunit Book of Police Procedure and Investigation. Loftland also covered the full legal consequences of police work including forensic analysis, the court trial, and incarceration. I couldn’t recommend this fantastic book enough. Reviewed in Le Coeur de l’Artiste: More personal anecdotes and stories from real policemen and women would have been much more helpful.
